Researchers, industry partners, and public-sector leaders convened in Lafayette, Louisiana for a two-day AHeAD (Accessible Healthcare through AI-Augmented Decisions) planning session hosted by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Rather than a showcase of polished demos, the gathering was designed as a working convening—aligning partners across universities, health systems, agencies, and companies around a practical agenda for what healthcare AI should actually do in the real world.

A consistent theme across discussions was rural health access, reflecting the broader national momentum behind Rural Health Transformation efforts. The conversations focused on the kinds of environments where technology is hardest to deploy: clinics with limited staff, uneven connectivity, and high variability in patient needs. In that context, the convening emphasized AI systems that can support stretched workforces and expand access without compromising safety, trust, or accountability.

The resulting AHeAD project portfolio spans a wide range of use cases—from conversational agents for diabetes education and agentic co-analysts for public health analytics, to federated learning across health systems, smartphone-based retinal imaging for low-resource screening, and multimodal AI for nursing home care. Other projects tackle infrastructure-level challenges, including interpretable uncertainty quantification, accessibility testing for disfluent speech, and adversarial testing to secure medical LLM-based agentic systems. Together, the list reads less like “AI for everything” and more like targeted solutions for specific, high-friction problems in care delivery.

Across these projects, the central question shifts from “Can AI do this?” to “Can AI be trusted to do this—here?” The portfolio repeatedly prioritizes decision support over automation, aiming to reduce cognitive burden while keeping humans accountable. Safety and governance show up as first-class requirements through work on uncertainty, validation, and security—recognizing that accuracy alone is not the same as clinical safety or operational reliability.
